How to set goals

Want to see the Swiss Alps, make it a goal.

I, like many people, was not taught how to move my life in a positive direction. I didn't learn how money works or what I was good at in school. I never learned how to be an adult. Through hard work, reading, living, school, military, more living, I think I figured it out. I have seen a pattern in several books I have read. In these books they talk about setting goals. It may sound like an easy task to make a goal and do what you can to get there but you would be wrong. This blog will talk about 5 ways to make goals and propel your life to the next level.

Michael Korda once said "One way to keep momentum going is to have constantly greater goals.” Momentum is hard to stop but it is also hard to start. You have to fight your internal force to get up and do something about your life.

1.Write Down your Goals

Annabel Acton wrote "There’s some impressive science to back up goal setting. And yet it’s something we’re never taught or encouraged to do. But the statistics don’t lie, and make a strong argument for getting good at this skill; and making a habit of it. A Harvard Business Study found that the 3% of graduates from their MBA who had their goals written down, ended up earning ten times as much as the other 97% put together, just ten years after graduation." With statistics like this, it is hard to not start writing goals but what is the proper way to write down goals?

In the book "7 Strategies for Wealth and Happiness," Jim Rohn says that you have to ask 6 questions about your life in order to write proper goals. The 6 questions are:

1. What do I want to do?

2.What do I want to be?

3. What do I want to see?

4. What do I want to have?

5. Where do I want to go?

6. What would I like to share?

Take the time and answer these. Add time to these statements and see how your life will be. An example would be "what do I want within the next one to ten years?" Let your mind run wild. Write down these answers and envision a better future for yourself. Think about how long it is going to take you to buy that Tesla Roadster and write down "I will own a Tesla Roadster in 5 years." Write down about 10 goals that you can achieve in the next 10 years and try to a good range. Don't have too many 10 year goals and no 1 year goals. You will need the short victories to propel you all the way to the 10 year goal. One goal I have is to make 100k a year with my business in 3 years.

2. Give yourself a prize/punishment for the goal

Telling your best friends that you will lose 25 lbs by the summer or you will pay them $100 a piece, is a good motivator to get you to the gym. Not only would it be fiscally hard on you but your friends will keep you from eating that second danish instead of hitting the elliptical 4 days a week. Losing that 25 lbs and scheduling a photoshoot so you can show off your accomplishment is another great way to boost yourself. You will have a physical reminder of where you have come from.

You can have a goal like you will finish barber school on time or you will move back in with your parents. The goals don't have to be massive but they do need to put you in a place where you envisioned your life. If you want to be an astronaut in 10 years becoming a black apron at starbucks in 1 year won't help get you there. How about getting into a science university after high school? That is a step in the right direction. When you think about the punishment, it should hurt. The rewards should be equally amazing. How about buying a new phone or a dog (I love weiner dogs and that would be something I would get myself)

3. Make a quantifiable plan

If you are going to lose 25 lbs in 1 year, how many pounds per week do you need to lose? Half a pound a week for 52 weeks. Write that down. If you don't lose that half a pound that week, you owe yourself a half pound. Don't beat yourself up and try and make that 1 lbs loss the next week. If you want to have 10k in your savings account in 3 years, how can you cut-out/make $278 a month to put in your bank account? Can you Uber, flip yard sale goods on FB, become a social media manager for your local coffee shop, or even sell some of the stuff you have at your house that you aren't using? Sell that Iphone 5s on your wardrobe on Swappa and get $100 from it.

By making a plan quantifiable, it allows you to see your progress and motivate you to move forward. By making the plan and following it, you can stay focused on those goals a reality. By breaking into weeks or semesters, you can get rid of the vague "I want to lose weight by the summer." Well how much do you want to lose and by when? What is the date? How much do you weigh now? Answering these question will increase your chances of succeeding.

4. Answer your "Why"

Why are you doing this? Why do you want to have 100k in the bank? Why do you want to get that MBA? Why do you want to get your parents business to 3 million dollars a year? Why are you doing this? Did you get embarrassed by having your card declined getting groceries. Are you tired of your family giving your sister all the praise for her career in finance? Just like you can't have vague goals, you can't have vague reasons to why you are doing this goal. Losing weight to look good in front of your friends this summer is good but wanting to be healthy enough to see your kids grow up is better. You may want to drive a Mercedes Benz but not starving to death is a better reason to make that 10k. Write that down next to all of your goals. Ground yourself and focus on why you want "X."

5. Be prepared to make changes

Look, sometimes stuff happens. Sometimes your mom gets cancer and you have to hustle your way to pay her bills. It is time to rehash your plans and figure something out. You have to be flexible with what life throws at you. You may even have to put your dreams on pause. Don't lose hope, you have plenty of time to make moves to improving your life. Think in the next 50 years not 50 days. Go ahead and make long term goals of 20-30 years. Think about your retirement years. With that in mind, 10 years may not seem so long. Look at your goals and adjust them as you need to.

With these 5 steps to writing your goals, you will be unstoppable. You may sacrifice your 20's but murder your 30-40's. Your friends may be going out to the club every weekend but when you are financially stable and your side hustle is making more than they make on their main hustle, you can rest assure that you are going towards the right future. Keep pushing and keep your eyes on the prize. Whether it be a healthier, better looking body or a healthier bank account, you can achieve your goals and be the best version of who you are meant to be.
