Look, I get it. Not everyone is a creative person. We need people like accountants and assembly line workers but that does not mean you can't practice being creative. I will discuss 5 ways you can practice doing creative things to help build a creative mind.
1.Doodle- Get a notebook and some nice pens (I really like Pilot Pen G2) and start doodling away. This isn't anything serious. You are not going to be the next John Howard Sanden or Claude Monet but the exercise here is to relax your mind and build a relationship between your hands and your eyes. Sit down at your favorite coffee shop and just doodle for 5 minutes. Don't worry about rules or techniques, just sit there, grab some paper and pens, and start creating.
2. Learn an instrument- I recently started taking piano lessons. I am not musically gifted by any means, but learning something new in a realm that I am not familiar with helps jumpstart my brain and helps me create. Is there an instrument you always wanted to learn? go find something inexpensive on craigslist or a pawn shop, just start learning the fundamentals on YouTube. If you want to be at least decent go take lessons and support a local musician.
3. Take Jiu-Jitsu- Any martial art would be beneficial to you. It will help discipline you and get you moving. The health benefits are huge. In terms of making you creative, I like Jiu-jitsu because it is like playing chess but with someone else's body. You have to learn how to attack and defend. How to get out of holds in different ways and drilling. This martial is not about getting punched in the face but how to use leverage and to get position to submit your opponent.
4. Start a blog- Don't worry about making money or growing a following. Take a topic and just go with it. If you like peanut butter, write reviews of peanut butter. Learn how to make your own peanut butter. Just sit down and write something every day. Write the blog you wish you could read. Check out https://seths.blog/ and read what Seth Godin writes every day. It doesn't have to be something long or put all this work into it. Just start writing.
5. Learn how to bake- This is something else that I really enjoy doing. I am not great at baking but I enjoy trying out new recipes and mastering ones that kick my butt. This chocolate chess pie is something I have still yet to master but the experience is something that I enjoy and helps get the creative juices flowing. Try it, even the messed up pie is delicious.
Overall, the point is to try something new. You don't have to be the best at it, you don't have to master it, and you don't have to freak out that you can't do it Just relax, enjoy the journey, and grow that creative brain you have. Being creative is a muscle you have to exercise. The inspiration won't just come out of the ethereal plains of your subconscious unless you make the attempts to work towards a path of creativity.
